The Directive 2013/59/Euratom- protection against ionizing radiation comes into effect on February 6th, 2018

The new EURATOM 2013/59/ Directive, enacted on December 6th 2013, will come into force on the 6th of February 2018. This is the critical date that European States must comply with the new policy, and assigned practitioners must start to enforce compliance locally.

The new policy and procedures establish enhanced measures towards basic safety standards for the protection of the health of individuals’ subject to occupational, medical and public exposure against the dangers arising from ionizing radiation.

The deadline is important for practitioners’ as it:

  • Requires practitioners’ to establish new safety standards for ensuring the safety of patients and staff exposed to radiation
  • Changes in terminology presents a new meaning to achieve compliance, which will expose 99% of radiotherapy centers in terms of current working practice
  • Equipment providers must now also comply with the directive, but it will be the practitioners’ responsibility to ensure that they do when purchasing their equipment
  • All findings of a compliance inspection will be made public
  • Failure to comply with the directive could result in the withdrawal of the practitioners’ license to operate

IDENTIFY, developed by HUMEDIQ, has been designed to assist you with achieving compliance by minimizing risk to “the lowest means possible” without compromising treatment quality. The unique nature of IDENTIFY will increase optimization and transparency within your clinical workflow and deliver a full audit of all activities undertaken.

IDENTIFY addresses compliance with the new EURATOM Directive by:

  • Correctly identifying the patient
  • Correctly ensuring the correct equipment/medication is provided
  • Correctly and consistently reproducing the positioning of the patient
  • Continued monitoring of the patient throughout treatment
  • Full audit documentation (both in text and through images) of all activity- site ready for inspection

Please contact us at info@humediq.com to find out more information about the Directive 2013/59/ EURATOM and our role in the new regulation.

Significant Survival Rates with Patient Reported Outcomes App

As a milestone in digital healthcare solutions two independent studies just proved that digital tracking of patient-generated data via their mobile devices could change clinical outcomes and increase life expectations up to 7 months in patients with advanced cancers

“Median overall survival was 31.2 months in the patient reported outcomes (PRO) group and 26.0 months in the usual care group.”1 Patients who communicated via app with their physicians during follow-up needed fewer CT scans and fewer emergency room visits.

“In one study, advanced lung-cancer patients who submitted weekly reports of their symptoms to doctors via a smartphone app lived substantially longer than those who had their disease checked in the normal way with a CT scan every 12 weeks or 24 weeks, French researchers said. After one year, 75% of patients using the app were alive compared with 49% of those who had standard doctor visits.”2
“Patients using the app had a 26% increase in one-year survival, the researchers said, with median survival of 19 months for those reporting symptoms on the app compared with 12 months with standard checkups.”3

CAREONLINE as an all-in-one digital solution for efficient, coordinated care fulfills a wide range of features to track patients’ health and react on abnormalities and deviations from a given standard. Final resolution of dispute over agreement for exclusive supply of Identify™ between humediQ and companies of the Elekta Group

Mai 25, 2016 - In October 2014 humediQ GmbH initiated legal proceedings with the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) against two companies in the Elekta group, namely Medical Intelligence Medizintechnik GmbH (MI) and Elekta Ltd. The dispute relates to an agreement from October 2011 for exclusive supply of Identify™ during an initial time of three years under the Elekta label. Identify is a patient identification and setup verification product. HumediQ asked to take delivery and payment in respect of an outstanding volume of Identify Products. MI and Elekta denied the claim and terminated the PLDA on the grounds of alleged deceit or material breach of a warranty on the part of humediQ and counterclaimed damages from humediQ.

On May 23, 2016, in a final decision, the LCIA awarded substantial damages and interest to humediQ GmbH. In addition, it dismissed all counterclaims made by the two Elekta group companies brought against humediQ GmbH.

humediQ GmbH was represented by Preu Bohlig & Partner (Sebastian Frhr. von Bechtolsheim and Dr. Alexander Harguth) in Munich, and Klaus Reichert SC and Kyle Lawson of Brick Court Chambers in London. The Elekta companies were represented by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (Boris Kasolowsky, Wolrad Prinz zu Waldeck, Robert Whitener, Alexander Monro, and Moritz Schmitt).

IDENTIFY™ salutes CAREONLINE™

At the 2016 European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) exhibition, 29 April to 3 May at the Lingotto Fiere, humediQ will demonstrate advanced solutions that provide clinicians with the tools to save and improve lives of cancer patients worldwide.

The comprehensive and updated system IDENTIFY which is made to increase staff confidence in the integrity of patient identification and set up will be accompanied by our latest innovation CAREONLINE.

IDENTIFY takes advantage of precision radiofrequency identification technology and will ensure the right patient is being treated at the right location, with the correct set up and equipment.
Identify enables patient queuing, selection of patient details and monitoring of set-up position, optimizing workflow and enhancing safety. Identify will be a scalable solution – from the treatment room to the entire department – allowing centers to grow as needs change.

CAREONLINE is a therapy-complementary care system that enables regular data acquisition independent from the location of a patient. Attending physicians, who use the system, request their patients to answer regular questions, perform simple measurements by themselves and take medication regularly. The patient receives this elongated therapy plan on his smartphone and is reminded in time to complete the given tasks. Results plus task compliance are transferred back and visualized to the physician to support treatment adaptation during control appointments.

The addition of Careonline to our portfolio will address the desire of our customers to confidently provide better care for their out-patient treatments by keeping an eye on the quality of life of their patients and potential complications during therapy or follow-up. Providing care does not stop at the hospital door anymore.

Not only empowering confident setup but also reducing the time required to do so.

IDENTIFY™ helps solve one of the biggest challenges in cancer care safety: independent verification of the patient’s identification, set up and movement during radiotherapy treatment. “Just like scuba divers carry out a buddy check, where each diver checks that the other's diving equipment is configured and functioning correctly just before the start of the dive, with IDENTIFY™ you can check the patient setup before and throughout the session to minimize risks and increase the safety, efficacy and efficiency of the treatment you provide,” says Christian Hieronimi, CEO of humediQ GmbH.
